On Wednesday, Indian Government has banned another 118 Chinese app under “section 69 of Information Technology Act“. These 118 Chinese apps are an addition on the previous 59 Chinese apps which have been already banned in India on 29^th June.

The previous list included popular apps like tiktok, uc browser, helo, xender etc. which got banned due to several concerns of data privacy reported by the security agencies. But, even at that time those 59 apps were not only the ones that got reported. These 118 apps were also identified in the range of concern.

So, as for now there is a total of 224 Chinese apps that are banned in India.

These are some of the popular apps in the second list. It seems like in this list, the only major blow is Pubg Mobile which is currently the most popular game among the Indian youth.

In the first list there were more number of popular apps like tiktok, helo, xender, uc browser etc.

So, here is the thing, when these apps have all the permissions, they start to collect different types of information about you like your online behaviour, what you search & topic or products you are interested in. sometimes they even record what you are typing on your keyboard e.g. passwords, private messages  etc.

Now you may say that why Chinese apps only? Why not others? Let alone others, even google needs all kind of personal data & permissions.  

Yes, this information is collected even by google so it can provide best online experience. The collection of this type of information is not the problem in itself. The problem arises when the topic of use of this type of data comes. Companies that are non-chinese have a strict data privacy policy & this type of data are not used or given to any third party without your concern.

Although, Chinese companies also claim to have same type of data privacy policies. But there is a law in china that obliges any company in china to give any sort of data that government wants from them about their users or anything. This law comes under “national intelligence law article 7”.
